Ormai manca poco alla premiazione degli Annie Awards 2024 organizzato da ASIFA-Hollywood (per conoscere l’intera storia di questo prestigioso premio leggere questo articolo). 

Un Annie Award è nientemeno che il più alto onore che si possa ottenere per chi lavora nel cinema di animazione. Questo riconoscimento è l’evento dell’anno, sia per appassionati che per quelli del settore. 

Siamo ovviamente nel periodo dei premi e già qualche settimana fa la giuria dei Golden Globes ha premiato come miglior film d’animazione Il ragazzo e l’airone, l’ultimo sforzo dello Studio Ghibli e del maestro Hayao Miyazaki.

Ma quali sono le opere candidate quest’anno agli Annie? L’11 Gennaio ASIFA ha annunciato le nomination. In totale ci sono trentadue categorie e in più gli speciali Juried Awards. La premiazione si terrà Sabato 17 Febbraio presso la Royce Hall della UCLA a Los Angeles.

Il progetto più nominato di quest’anno è l’adattamento del fumetto di ND Stevenson, Nimona, prodotto da Annapurna per Netflix e diretto da Nick Bruno e Troy Quane. L’amatissima avventura fantasy, apertamente queer, ha ottenuto ben dieci nomination, tra cui quella per il miglior lungometraggio, una in più rispetto a Pinocchio del premio Oscar Guillermo del Toro, ottenuto l’anno scorso.

Nimona è seguito da Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Sony/Marvel) con otto, Il ragazzo e l’airone (Studio Ghibli/GKIDS) e Suzume (CoMix Wave/Crunchyroll) con sette, Tartarughe Ninja: Caos Mutante (Paramount/Nickelodeon/Point Grey) ed Elemental (Pixar/Disney) con sei e Robot Dreams (Arcadia/Noodles Prod./Les Films du Worso/Neon) con cinque.

Quest’anno, per la prima volta agli Annies, le potenze dell’animazione Disney, Pixar e DreamWorks, perennemente nominate, non sono riuscite a ottenere la nomina per il miglior lungometraggio. Anche i lungometraggi Illumination e Aardman hanno subito la stessa sorte. Nonostante non sia riuscito ad arrivare alla corsa più importante, Galline in fuga: L’alba dei nugget (Netflix), la stop-motion di Bristol, ha ottenuto due nomination in altre categorie.

Per quanto riguarda la televisione, il titolo più designato è stato il dramma netflixiano Blue Eye Samurai, con sette nomine, che precede Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur (Disney/Marvel) con sei, e l’antologia di animazione africana Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire (Triggerfish/Disney+) con cinque, Hilda (Silvergate/Mercury Filmworks/Netflix) e la serie fantascientifica/horror Scavengers Reign (Titmouse/Green Street/Max) con quattro ciascuna.

In più vengono assegnati i Juried Awards, in onore di risultati senza precedenti e contributi eccezionali all’animazione:

  • Il Winsor McCay Award, in riconoscimento dei contributi offerti nella vita o nella carriera, a tre destinatari: la leggendaria animatrice e regista Charlotte “Lotte” Reiniger (postuma), il prolifico compositore dello Studio Ghibli Joe Hisaishi e l’animatrice e produttrice del National Film Board, Marcy Page.
  • Il June Foray Award per l’impatto significativo, benevolo o di beneficenza sarà consegnato alla Fondazione BRIC, Alison Mann e Nicole Hendrix, co-fondatrici.
  • L’Ub lwerks Award per il progresso tecnico nel settore dell’animazione sarà assegnato a John Oxberry (postumo).
  • Lo Special Achievement Award, che riconosce risultati unici ed eccezionali non riconosciuti all’interno dell’attuale struttura delle categorie di premi, sarà consegnato agli artisti di Walt Disney Animation.

I suoi lavori e i suoi studi affrontano diversi contenuti e argomenti fra cui la storia dell’arte, la filosofia, l’antropologia, la psicoanalisi, il simbolismo, il cinema, l’animazione, la mitologia e la fiaba. Fra le sue esperienze annovera pure numerose attività teatrali e musicali. Lavora con la grafica e il video. Recentemente insegna Discipline Audiovisive al Liceo Artistico di Lucca.
