Annie Awards 2024 // I vincitori

E anche quest’anno gli Annie Awards 2024 sono stati consegnati. La cerimonia si è tenuta Sabato 17 Febbraio presso la Royce Hall della UCLA a Los Angeles. Ricordiamo che in totale esistono ben trentadue categorie e in più gli speciali Juried Awards. Per tutte le nomination leggere il nostro articolo precedente!

Un Annie Award è nientemeno che il più alto onore che si possa ottenere per chi lavora nel cinema di animazione. Questo riconoscimento è l’evento dell’anno, sia per appassionati che per quelli del settore. La serata è organizzata da ASIFA-Hollywood (per conoscere l’intera storia di questo prestigioso premio leggere questo articolo). 

Il progetto più nominato di quest’anno è stato l’adattamento del fumetto di ND Stevenson, Nimona, prodotto da Annapurna per Netflix e diretto da Nick Bruno e Troy Quane. L’amatissima avventura fantasy, apertamente queer, ha ottenuto ben dieci nomination, tra cui quella per il miglior lungometraggio.

Nimona è stato seguito da Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Sony/Marvel) con otto, Il ragazzo e l’airone (Studio Ghibli/GKIDS) e Suzume (CoMix Wave/Crunchyroll) con sette, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (Paramount/Nickelodeon/Point Grey) ed Elemental (Pixar/Disney) con sei e Robot Dreams (Arcadia/Noodles Prod./Les Films du Worso/Neon) con cinque.

Quest’anno, per la prima volta agli Annies, le potenze dell’animazione Disney, Pixar e DreamWorks, perennemente nominate, non sono riuscite a ottenere la candidatura per il miglior lungometraggio. Anche i lungometraggi Illumination e Aardman hanno subito la stessa sorte.

Per quanto riguarda la televisione, il titolo più designato è stato il dramma netflixiano Blue Eye Samurai, con sette nomine, che precede Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur (Disney/Marvel) con sei, e l’antologia di animazione africana Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire (Triggerfish/Disney+) con cinque, Hilda (Silvergate/Mercury Filmworks/Netflix) e la serie fantascientifica/horror Scavengers Reign (Titmouse/Green Street/Max) con quattro ciascuna.

Ed ora sveliamo i vincitori del 51° Annie Awards…

Per quanto riguarda la sezione lungometraggi, il Best Feature (Miglior lungometraggio) lo ha vinto Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Quest’anno le opere in gara erano molto valide, quest’ultimo si è dovuto scontrare e si sta scontrando (ricordiamo che gli Academy Awards sono alle porte, leggi l’articolo) con l’acclamato successo de Il ragazzo e l’airone di Hayao Miyazaki e Nimona. Alla fine l’Uomo Ragno e il suo multiverso ha portato a casa ben altri sei premi tra cui regia, character design, effetti visivi, colonna sonora, scenografia e montaggio. Il ragazzo e l’airone ne ha vinto storyboard (Miyazaki) e character animation (Takeshi Honda), invece Nimona ha conquistato doppiaggio (Chloë Grace Moretz nel ruolo della protagonista) e sceneggiatura (Robert L. Baird, Lloyd Taylor). Lo spagnolo Pablo Berger ha ritirato l’Annie come Miglior film indipendente per Robot Dreams

Per quanto riguarda la TV e lo Streaming, Blue Eye Samurai è stato il chiaro campione della serata. La serie Blue Spirit-Netflix ha vinto sei Annies (miglior media televisivo per adulti, effetti, animazione dei personaggi, scenografia, scrittura e montaggio). Ambientata nel Giappone del periodo Edo del XVII secolo, la serie franco-statunitense splendidamente animata in 2D è stata creata dalla coppia moglie/marito Amber Noizumi e Micheal Green, con la supervisione della regista e produttrice Jane Wu. Ha debuttato nel Novembre 2023 con le migliori recensioni ed è stata rinnovata subito per una seconda stagione. Star Wars: Visions di Disney+ è stato un altro dei preferiti. Il co-fondatore di Cartoon Saloon, Paul Young, ha vinto il premio per la migliore regia televisiva Annie per l’episodio Screechers Reach, mentre Markus Wormstorm, Nadia Darries e Dineo du Toit hanno vinto per la migliore musica per l’episodio Aau’s Song.

Nella sezione cortometraggi vince War Is Over! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko, una storia contro la guerra scritta da Sean Lennon e Dave Mullins, accompagnata dall’iconica canzone natalizia di John Lennon e Yoko Ono: Happy Xmas (War Is Over). Diretto dallo stesso Mullins, produzione Brad Booker, produttore esecutivo Yoko Ono Lennon e Sean Ono Lennon, musiche di Thomas Newman. La pellicola è stata coprodotta con Lenono Music, ElectroLeague, WetaFX ed Epic Games.

La studentessa della CalArts, Justine King, ha vinto il premio come miglior film studentesco con The Little Poet, un viaggio tra pittori famosi attraverso un sognatore a forma di uovo.

Inoltre sono stati assegnati i Juried Awards, in onore di risultati senza precedenti e contributi eccezionali all’animazione:

  • Il Winsor McCay Award, in riconoscimento dei contributi offerti nella vita o nella carriera, a tre destinatari: la leggendaria animatrice e regista Charlotte “Lotte” Reiniger (postuma), il prolifico compositore dello Studio Ghibli Joe Hisaishi e l’animatrice e produttrice del National Film Board, Marcy Page.
  • Il June Foray Award per l’impatto significativo, benevolo o di beneficenza sarà consegnato alla Fondazione BRIC, Alison Mann e Nicole Hendrix, co-fondatrici.
  • Il Premio Ub lwerks per il progresso tecnico nel settore dell’animazione sarà assegnato a John Oxberry (postumo).
  • Lo Special Achievement Award, che riconosce risultati unici ed eccezionali non riconosciuti all’interno dell’attuale struttura delle categorie di premi, sarà consegnato a The Artists of Walt Disney Animation.

Ha frequentato il Liceo Artistico A. Passaglia di Lucca ed ha concluso i cinque anni di Nuove Tecnologie dell’Arte all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Carrara. I suoi lavori e i suoi studi affrontano diversi contenuti e argomenti fra cui la storia dell’arte, la filosofia, l’antropologia, la psicoanalisi, il simbolismo, il cinema, l’animazione, la mitologia e la fiaba. Fra le sue esperienze annovera pure numerose attività teatrali e musicali. Lavora con la grafica e il video. Recentemente insegna Discipline Audiovisive al Liceo Artistico di Lucca.
